Paintings created by Michiko Theurer for ARCHITECT, a music drama that explores the connections between musical sound and architectural space as exemplified by the life and work of Louis Kahn (instrumental music composed by Lewis Spratlan, electro-acoustic music by Jenny Kallick and John Downey). Michi collaborated with librettist and composer Jenny Kallick to create a multimedia film companion to the opera featuring Michi's watercolors, photography, and video. The film has been shown to critical acclaim at film festivals in New York, Chicago, and Milan, as well as at the Kimbell Art Museum (designed by Kahn). It is released as an enhanced CD/DVD by Navona Records.
"The video montage features numerous photos and film clips of architecture (Kahn’s included) and of nature as well as watercolor paintings created for this project by Michiko Theurer. The photos are graphically manipulated in various ways, which effectively blurs the boundaries between the photos and the paintings. Theurer’s abstract paintings show strong influences from Turner and Kandinsky. The overall effect of this montage is convincingly evocative of architectural thought and creativity in general." --Opera News
